How fast does a quad or ATV go?

How fast does a quad or ATV go? We explain which speeds are possible depending on the vehicle and registration, and what matters.

How fast does a quad or ATV go?

How fast a quad or ATV goes cannot be answered from engine capacity or engine output alone. What counts is the specific vehicle, its technical design and, above all, its registration.

Technically, a powerful ATV can go considerably faster than the speed it is registered for in a particular vehicle class.

How fast does a T3b ATV go?

In Germany, many ATVs are offered with T3b registration.

Classic T3b models are often built for a maximum design speed of 60 km/h. There are now also T3b vehicles with ABS, however, which can be registered for higher speeds depending on their type approval.

So when buying, don't simply assume that every T3b ATV has a top speed of 60 km/h.

What always counts are the details of the specific vehicle and its vehicle documents.

How fast does an LOF quad or ATV go?

Older LOF vehicles, or those already registered as LOF, can have considerably higher speeds entered.

How fast a particular vehicle is allowed to go depends on its specific registration and the entries in the vehicle documents.

Especially when buying used, you should therefore check which top speed is actually entered.

How fast do 500, 700 and 1,000 cc ATVs go?

More engine capacity generally means more potential power reserves, but not automatically a correspondingly higher registered top speed.

A 500 or 700 cc ATV, for example, can have the same registered top speed as a much more powerful 1,000 cc model because of its registration.

The difference then shows more clearly in:

  • acceleration
  • pulling power
  • power reserves
  • behaviour on inclines
  • performance under load

That is why you shouldn't choose the engine solely by the top speed you want.

Do I need a particularly fast ATV for the road?

Not necessarily.

If you mainly ride tours and longer road stretches, look not only at top speed but also at ride comfort, tyres, suspension, seating position and the right registration.

For hunting, agriculture, forestry or snow clearing, maximum speed often plays a much smaller role. Here, things like four-wheel drive, towing capacity, ground clearance and equipment matter more.

Why do two similar ATVs have different top speeds?

Even vehicles with similar engine capacity and comparable engine output can have different top speeds.

Reasons for this can include:

  • different registration
  • different gearing
  • different vehicle set-up
  • tyres and tyre size
  • vehicle weight
  • electronic limiters

That is why vehicles cannot be reliably compared on engine capacity alone.

Where do I find the permitted top speed?

You will find the top speed that applies to your specific vehicle in the vehicle documents.

Especially when buying a used quad or ATV, check this entry. Claims such as “it goes faster when derestricted” are irrelevant to permitted use on public roads.

Conclusion

How fast a quad or ATV goes does not depend only on engine output and engine capacity. Vehicle class, type approval and the specific registration play a decisive role.

While many classic T3b vehicles run at 60 km/h, there are now also T3b models with ABS and higher registered speeds. Older LOF vehicles can also have other speeds entered.

So if you want to buy an ATV, don't just ask how much horsepower or engine capacity it has, but which top speed is actually entered for that specific vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

In short

Many classic T3b ATVs are registered for 60 km/h. Newer T3b models with ABS can also be registered for higher speeds, depending on their type approval.

Not automatically. Top speed depends not only on engine capacity and output but also on registration, gearing and how the vehicle is set up.

Yes. There are now T3b vehicles with ABS that are registered for higher speeds, depending on their type approval.

That depends on the specific vehicle and the entries in the vehicle documents. LOF vehicles can have considerably higher speeds than 60 km/h entered.

You will find the top speed entered for your specific vehicle in the vehicle documents.
