What licence do I need for a quad or ATV?
Which driving licence do you need for a quad or ATV? We explain when class B is enough and when other licence classes may be relevant.

What licence do I need for a quad or ATV?
Which licence you need depends on the vehicle class and the specific registration of the quad or ATV. Many common quads and ATVs can be ridden with a class B car driving licence. Class B covers motor vehicles up to 3,500 kg permissible total mass, unless they belong to a licence class that is expressly excluded.
For vehicles used in agriculture or forestry, licence classes L or T can also be relevant. Here, however, special requirements apply regarding the type of vehicle, its speed and its actual agricultural or forestry use.
Our tip
Before you buy, always check the vehicle documents to see which licence the specific vehicle requires. Especially with the different registration types, don't go by engine capacity or engine output alone.
