ATV or side-by-side: which suits me better?
ATV or side-by-side? We explain the key differences and show which vehicle is better suited to leisure, work, hunting, agriculture or winter service.

ATV or side-by-side: which suits me better?
ATVs and side-by-sides are both suitable for off-road use, leisure and work. Even so, they differ considerably in handling, space, carrying capacity and how they feel to drive.
An ATV is ridden with handlebars and has a straddle seat. A side-by-side, on the other hand, is driven much like a car, with a steering wheel and pedals. Driver and passenger sit next to each other.
Which type of vehicle suits you better therefore depends above all on what you want to do with it.
What speaks for an ATV?
An ATV is compact, manoeuvrable and takes up comparatively little space. On narrow forest tracks, on the hunting ground or in difficult terrain in particular, that can be a big advantage.
Depending on the model, four-wheel drive, luggage racks, a towing option and a winch are available. Many ATVs can also be fitted with accessories such as transport boxes or a snow plough blade.
An ATV is particularly suitable if:
- you want to get around as compactly and manoeuvrably as possible
- mostly one person rides the vehicle
- narrow tracks and difficult terrain are part of the job
- you want to combine leisure and work
- you don't need a large cargo bed or an enclosed cab
Typical models include the Can-Am Outlander, Polaris Sportsman, CFMOTO CForce or Segway Snarler.
What speaks for a side-by-side?
A side-by-side offers considerably more space and is driven with a steering wheel and pedals. Driver and passenger sit next to each other, and many work models also have a cargo bed.
For regular work in particular, that is a big advantage. Tools, equipment or other material can be carried directly on the vehicle.
Depending on the model, a roof, windscreen or a complete cab with heating are also possible.
A side-by-side is particularly suitable if:
- two or more people regularly need to ride along
- a cargo bed is needed
- tools or material need to be carried
- a weather-protected workplace is wanted
- the vehicle is regularly used for work
- winter service or trailer use is planned
Typical work models include the Can-Am Traxter, Polaris Ranger or CFMOTO UForce.
Which is better for hunting and gamekeeping?
If you are mostly out on your own, drive narrow forest tracks and only need to carry a limited amount of equipment, an ATV will often serve you well.
If, on the other hand, you regularly carry more equipment, take a passenger or are out in all weathers, you will benefit more from a side-by-side with a cargo bed and, where appropriate, a cab.
Which is better for farming and forestry?
For inspection rounds, smaller jobs and particularly narrow tracks, an ATV can be completely sufficient.
As soon as larger amounts of tools or material are carried regularly, a side-by-side offers clear advantages thanks to its cargo bed. An enclosed cab can also make sense for daily, year-round use.
Which option is better suited therefore depends heavily on the actual work.
Which is better for winter service?
For smaller areas, a suitably equipped ATV with a snow plough blade can already be enough. Its compact build makes it particularly suitable for narrower paths and smaller yards.
For regular winter service on larger areas, a side-by-side offers additional advantages. A full cab with heating protects the driver on longer shifts, and depending on the vehicle and equipment, a suitable spreader can be used on the cargo bed, for example.
Which is better for leisure and touring?
Here it depends more on the driving experience you want.
An ATV offers a more active ride with handlebars and a straddle seat. If that typical ATV riding feel is exactly what you are after, it is the better fit.
A side-by-side, on the other hand, offers more car-like controls with a steering wheel, pedals and seats side by side. This means driver and passenger can sit in the vehicle together and, depending on the model, take considerably more equipment along.
ATV or side-by-side: the key differences
ATV: more compact, more manoeuvrable, handlebars and straddle seat, needs less space and is particularly interesting for narrow tracks and active riding.
Side-by-side: steering wheel and pedals, seats side by side, more space, often a cargo bed and, depending on the model, an enclosed cab is possible.
Conclusion: ATV or side-by-side?
If you are looking for a compact, manoeuvrable vehicle and don't need a large cargo bed or cab, take a closer look at an ATV.
If, on the other hand, you regularly carry people, tools or material, need a cargo bed or want to work all year round in an enclosed cab, a side-by-side will often suit you better.
So the deciding question is not which vehicle is better in principle, but which vehicle concept better suits your own intended use.
