Can-Am Ryker or Spyder: what is the difference and which one suits me?

The Can-Am Ryker and Can-Am Spyder share the same basic concept: two wheels at the front, one wheel at the back and a completely different riding experience from a classic motorcycle.

Even so, the Ryker and Spyder differ considerably. The Ryker is more compact, more pared back and geared more towards uncomplicated riding fun. Depending on the model, the Spyder offers considerably more comfort, equipment and scope for longer tours.

Which model series suits you better therefore depends mainly on how you want to use the vehicle.

What makes the Can-Am Ryker stand out?

The Ryker is the more compact way into the Can-Am on-road world. The controls are deliberately kept simple and the vehicle has a direct, agile feel.

Depending on the model and model year, there are different engines and versions, including the Ryker 600, Ryker 900 and Ryker Rally.

The Ryker is particularly suitable if:

  • you are looking for a compact leisure vehicle
  • riding fun comes first
  • you mostly ride alone
  • you tend to ride shorter or medium-length tours
  • you prefer a comparatively pared-back vehicle concept
  • you want the most uncomplicated way into the Can-Am on-road world

Personalisation and accessories also play a big part with the Ryker.

What makes the Can-Am Spyder stand out?

The Spyder is bigger and geared more towards comfort, equipment and longer distances.

Within the Spyder series there are, in turn, clear differences. A Spyder F3, for example, follows a different concept from a Spyder RT.

The Spyder is particularly suitable if:

  • you want to go on longer tours regularly
  • comfort matters more
  • you often want to ride two-up
  • you need more storage space
  • you want more extensive equipment
  • the vehicle is also to be used as a comfortable touring machine

The Spyder RT in particular is aimed squarely at riders who want to combine longer distances and journeys with the comfort to match.

Ryker or Spyder for beginners?

Both vehicle concepts can be interesting for beginners.

The Ryker is more compact and pared back to the essentials. For many riders, that makes it an interesting way into the world of Can-Am's three-wheeled on-road vehicles.

The Spyder is bigger and in return offers more comfort and equipment.

Which one feels better is therefore best decided on a test ride.

Ryker or Spyder for longer tours?

If you want to ride longer distances regularly, you should take a closer look at the Spyder.

More comfort, larger fairings and, depending on the model, considerably more storage space make it particularly interesting for longer tours.

The Ryker can also be used for touring. However, if you regularly ride many kilometres in one go or are planning longer journeys, you benefit more from what a Spyder has to offer.

Ryker or Spyder for two people?

If you regularly want to take a passenger, you should pay particularly close attention to the specific model and its equipment.

The Spyder, especially in its more touring-oriented versions, offers considerably more scope for comfortable riding two-up.

With the Ryker, carrying a passenger is also possible depending on the model and equipment. However, if you mostly want to ride longer distances two-up, you should include the Spyder in a direct comparison.

Spyder F3 or Spyder RT?

Within the Spyder family, too, there are distinctions to be made.

The Spyder F3 combines the three-wheeled vehicle concept with a rather sporty, cruiser-like character and a comparatively open seating position.

The Spyder RT, on the other hand, is geared much more towards touring and travel comfort. Wind protection, storage space and comfort take centre stage here.

Put simply:

  • Ryker: compact, pared back and focused on riding fun
  • Spyder F3: bigger, more powerful and more in cruiser/touring territory
  • Spyder RT: designed especially for comfort and longer journeys

Is a Ryker cheaper than a Spyder?

In general, the Ryker is priced below the larger Spyder models.

The actual price does, however, depend on the model year, version and equipment. Accessories can also have a considerable effect on the final price.

If you have a particular budget, you should therefore not just look at the base price but compare the fully equipped vehicle.

Which vehicle suits me?

If you are looking for a compact vehicle for leisure, weekend rides and uncomplicated riding fun, the Ryker is particularly interesting.

If you want more comfort, equipment and space or regularly plan longer tours and journeys, you should take a closer look at the Spyder models.

Within the Spyder family, you can then choose between the more cruiser-oriented F3 and the RT, which is designed for travel comfort.

Conclusion: Ryker or Spyder?

The Ryker is not simply the small Spyder, and the Spyder is not simply the bigger Ryker. The two series meet different needs.

The Ryker focuses more on a compact, uncomplicated and direct riding experience. The Spyder offers more space, comfort and, depending on the version, considerably more touring qualities.

If you can't decide between the two, compare them directly and test-ride them if possible. Seating position, vehicle size and riding feel in particular are hard to judge on paper.
